What a slog this was! I wanted to like the writing but the author kept doing this strange thing where she'd have the protagonist talking about the present day, and then suddenly switch to talking about something in the past, making it hard to discern the timing of events. It was as if someone had scrambled the paragraphs in each chapter as a prank. More than once I had to stop reading and think - is this something that is currently happening or did it happen in the past? Not to mention the tiresome subject matter. Why do people in 2026 still think it's OK to lie about a child's biological history? Among other super tiresome overdone tropes I am tired of reading about. Can't recommend this one at all.
